Quality Telecommunications Tax Database.

Every year, hundreds of millions of rated telephone calls are correctly rated with tax rates provided by TelSwitch Inc.  Effortlessly, and without the headaches.

We've worked with thousands of municipalities, and have developed the comprehensive set of tax rates and rules for applying those taxes, and have created a white-paper outlining this set of rules, so that taxation is no longer a headache.

In conjunction with taxrates.com, TelSwitch Inc. is pleased to make available a comprehensive database containing the most up-to-date set of tax database information for the assesment of taxes on communications services.

Our database makes it easy to incorporate rating mechanisms directly into your billing and rating applications, and to provide a simple, and efficient interfact, to reporting agencies, such as Tax Partners, AlternaDev, Colonial Tax, Moss-Adams, Ernst & Young, and others.

These companies are familiar with our datatypes, and provide mechanisms for facilitating rapid development and incorporation into your package.

How did we Accomplish this?

TelSwitch Inc. is often asked how we maintain such a comprehensive, quality database containing the taxes and structures applicable to the sale of telecom services. It’s simple – we call them;

We maintain a sophisticated set of technologies that has allowed us to develop personal relationships with many of these municipalities.

TelSwitch Inc. is actively involved in pursuing those taxes that are applicable to Telecommunications.

Besides contacting federal, state, county, and municipal tax agencies, we also work with the respective compliance organizations to ensure that they are kept up to date with the information necessary to process our clients' tax results.

We look forward to working with you, and having the opportunity to provide your company with the most up-to-date data and information available for your taxing and rating purposes.

Database Documentation

TelSwitch Inc. believes in a pro-active approach to providing customers with good documentation, and clear directions on our products.  An empowered customer one that is informed, and has made decisions that are qualified, justified, and backed up by real data and information.

If there are any items of interest that are not addressed, please contact our support department.

More than Just Data.

It’s more than just providing structured data to our clients – to the extent possible, we also provide ourselves as a resource to the same municipalities and states that we call upon for this information.

We maintain meticulous records, which we continuously update; we also employ several web- and internet based database production technologies, which enable us to keep ourselves aware of telecom carriers.

Besides our clients, TelSwitch Inc. utilizes the database every day in our Service Bureau operations to rate millions of calls per month.  The added experience of utilizing our own product has especially allowed us to fine-tune elements of the database, and improve upon functional structures and formulas.

Database Design Considerations

Some design considerations should be taken into account while building the context of the Call Records Database {callrec} is to make sure that each telephone call be representative of the most accurate data type for that field.

Geocodes are the preferred method for determining the jurisdictional nature of telephone calls – these codes are developed by the U.S. Census Bureau and for the Public Domain.

The codes are sometimes called “F.I.P.S. Codes”, because they contain mechanisms developed by the U.S. Government for use in Federal Information Processing Systems.

While it is often assumed to be an efficiency factor to determine the taxes as a sum of the charges, rather than as a sum of the individual components, we would suggest otherwise.  Don’t do it.

When designing a database, make sure to place columns into the {callrec} tables to contain the follwing information:

  • federal_tax (float)
  • state_tax (float)
  • county_tax (float)
  • city_tax (float)
  • geocode (char[10])

Fields that contains tax result calculations should be currency type, or floating point, with a character (10) data type utilized for Geocodes.

Example Call Record Table (SQL2000).
